One of the things that immediately stands out about Bloom Ceramics is the glaze work.
Collections including Laguna, Frozen Pond, Rainstone, Greenstone and Willow each have their own character. Some are soft and subtle while others have layered colours and markings that almost resemble landscapes, water or stone.
Most pieces use several different glazes, and the Frozen Pond technique can involve as many as nine individual layers before the final firing (credit to Kathy McGuire, the pioneer of this technique).
The finished result cannot be completely controlled. The clay, the glaze, the position of a piece inside the kiln and the firing itself can all affect the final appearance. Rather than trying to remove those differences, Pippa embraces them.
It means pieces created using the same process can still emerge with their own colours, markings and personality. In many cases, the piece photographed on the website is the exact individual piece you will receive.

There is just as much thought behind the making process.
Clay left over from trimming and making is collected and reclaimed rather than thrown away. It can then be worked back into usable clay, helping Bloom Ceramics operate without unnecessarily wasting the material.
Water is also reused within the studio rather than simply being discarded after each stage of the process.
We especially like this practical approach. There is an awareness of the materials and resources being used and an effort to waste as little as possible, being mindful of and promoting sustainable practice.
The finished functional pieces are made to be enjoyed as part of everyday life, whether that means a favourite mug, a serving bowl brought out for dinner or a plate that makes an ordinary meal feel a little more special.
Bloom Ceramics is not only about buying the finished pieces.
Pippa also offers pottery classes, giving other people the opportunity to spend time working with clay and experience the process for themselves.
There are also studio events where people can see the ceramics more closely, discover pieces in person and learn a little more about how they are made.
There is something lovely about this part of the Bloom Ceramics’ story. Pottery originally gave Pippa a way to slow down and reconnect through making, and she is now able to share some of that experience with other people too.

Our Recommendation
What we love about Bloom Ceramics is that the finished piece is only part of the story.
There is thought behind the whole process, from reclaiming clay and reusing water to building layers of glaze and accepting the unpredictability of the kiln.
The result is pottery that feels individual, useful and very clearly made by a real person.
If you love ceramics with character and enjoy knowing how something has been made, Bloom Ceramics UK is a lovely one to discover.
